Dear Tour de Wyoming cyclists and volunteers,

Congratulations on your entry in the 14th annual Tour de Wyoming bicycle tour, scheduled to kick off on Sunday, July 18, 2010. You will join approximately 350 other cyclists as we tour southwestern Wyoming along with a few miles into Utah and Idaho.

This is the official "ENTRANT NEWSLETTER." Nothing will be sent via regular mail. All athletes will pick up their tour information packets, riding cue sheets, and ride souvenirs on Saturday afternoon and evening.  If you are unable to pick your packet up but have a friend who can do it for you, that is fine.

CLICK HERE for the 2010 Volunteer Manual. Printed copies will also be available when we meet on Saturday before the Tour begins.
GETTING STARTED
CHECK-IN July 17
4:30 to 7 p.m.

Location: Lincoln Middle School in Green River.  A map and directions are available on the Tour Web site.

At this check-in you will:
  • Receive your information packet, cue sheets, food wrist bands and luggage tags.
  • Receive your T-shirt (the real reason you're doing this, right?) and your jersey if you ordered one.
Saturday Meeting for all Participants and Volunteers
All Athletes and Volunteers must join in the orientation meeting on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the Middle School. Those who have let us know they can't make it need to make arrangements with others to get the information.

Volunteers will meet immediately after the meeting (at a place TBA) to finalize assignments and schedules.

Sunday Morning Start
  • The official start time each day is 6 a.m.  You, of course, can start after this time but you must have your luggage loaded on the luggage truck no later than 8 a.m.
  • Breakfast is from 5:30 to 7 a.m. each day.
  • Early risers PLEASE have consideration for others.  We have had issues in the past, particularly  with those staying in the gyms, of people getting up as early as 4 a.m. and waking others.
  • Check the Information Board, usually set up at the main entrance at our overnight locations, for any updates on the route.  Any changes or unexpected conditions will be put on the board each evening.

  • setting tents

Camping is available Saturday night, July 17, at the Middle School.

    luggage

Due to the volume of luggage weight limits will be strictly enforced.  The limit is 2 bags, neither over 40 pounds, or 1 bag under 50 pounds. Questionable bags will be weighed the first morning.

    Coal Creek
Laramie's Coal Creek Coffee owners, John and Jodie Guerin, will be offering REAL COFFEE (for all you coffee snobs out there) each morning.  Yee haw!
    ABOUT THE CYCLING
    DAILY DETAILS
    • Since we are staying at schools, please adhere to the NO ALCOHOL rule (actually, it is state law). We will eventually return to these schools in a future Tour de Wyoming and its extremely important we not abuse their hospitality - or the rules.
    • There will be signs at all overnight stops to let you know where to set up outdoor tents and indoor facilities.  DO NOT set up your tent until you are SURE you are in the designated area.  You risk getting awakened by lawn sprinklers if you go to the wrong area.
    • Port-a-potties and hand washing stations will be set up at all rest stops.
    • Rest stop food includes fruit, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and an assortment of other snacks.  If you have preferred riding foods, be sure to carry them on your own.
    • While you are free to start whenever you choose, rest stop times are listed on the cue sheets.  If you pass a rest stop prior to the opening of that site don't expect any food or drink and carry what you might need on your bike.  Those who are slower riders must reach the rest stop by the time it closes.  If you don't make it, a SAG volunteer will offer you a ride.  If you opt to continue on your own, you do so without support.
    • Remember EVERYONE on this event is a volunteer.  That includes the Tour Director and the entire Planning Committee. There is no turn-down service with chocolates on your pillow. Please pitch in to help, as needed, and keep our overnight locations and rest stops clean.  The rest stop volunteers are generally here with family and friends so that they have other activities they'd like to do each day.  Have consideration and don't force them to man their stations past the closing time schedule. If you are slower, you need to start earlier.
    • Dinner each evening is from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  Those who pre-paid for meals will be served before the hosts allow others to purchase a meal.  All meals are provided by civic groups as fundraisers.
    • <>Showers are available at the schools each evening, or at a near-by location (as in the case in Manila where it's at the KOA).
    • Check your information packet and the Information Board for the night's activities.  We have special entertainment - usually LIVE MUSIC - every evening except during our stay at the Garden City KOA
    Mechanical Support

Mitch Bock and Dale Hill will provide mechanical support again this year.  All of the Tour de Wyoming mechanics are cyclists.  The only way we can lure them into coming on the Tour is to guarantee they get to ride each day.  They will be on the road on their bikes.

BE PREPARED TO REPAIR YOUR OWN FLATS out on the road.  Other repairs are done after riding for the day but take your bike to them early.  Don’t take it to them at 9 p.m. and expect them to do it at the last minute.  Also, remember each rider must cover the cost of his or her own bike repairs

    Massage Therapy Available

Kathy Muthig, and her crew from Laramie will be joining us again this year.  Massage costs are $1/minute for up to 30 minute massages.  Look for Kathy and the other therapists under the white canopy.  Cash payment is preferred but checks and credit cards will be accepted. Schedule an appointment at registration to ensure you get the care you need.

    Medical Assistance

As with past tours, we’ll have 8 to 10 bike medics carrying small and very basic emergency packs on their bicycles in case they need to assist riders on the road. These kits have supplies to address only the simplest roadside emergencies.

In the majority of towns we enter, there are small rural clinics at the least, and often small hospitals for more urgent care. The bike medics are cyclists with some form of medical background that have volunteered to carry these kits and are willing to supply rudimentary services to the other riders. They deserve your appreciation if you meet them on the road.
    VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers man all the rest stops and provide food, drink and a bit of shade. There are also porta-potties and hand washing stations at all rest stops. Be sure to  honor the closing time schedules .

    sunrise
The ride officially starts at 6 a.m. each day with breakfast from 5:30 to 7 a.m. You are free to start your day when you choose but be mindful of the rest stop time schedules. Also, early risers PLEASE respect those around you and keep noise and use of light to a minimum.

    Mitch
Mitch Bock (and his crew) will, once again, provide mechanical support at the end destination each day.

    flats

Be prepared with the correct tools and supplies to fix your own flats.

    tired

Feeling too tuckered to go on? Our SAG volunteers are available to give you a lift down the road or to the end destination. They aren't a taxi service, though, so getting to the end town may not occur immediately as they also help other tired riders.  The best waiting options is at the rest stop where it's safest for SAG drivers to pick you up.

    talent

Got talent?  Maybe you do or maybe you don't; regardless you are invited to join in the fun with the last evening's talent show.  Prizes to all those brave enough to get before the crowd.
    AT THE END
    LAST DAY

We have showers available at the Middle School when you come into Green River on the last morning.  Please collect your gear from the luggage truck NO LATER THAN NOON.

Extra jerseys, T-shirts, etc. will be available for sale at that time and, most likely, on the evening in Manila.
    ADVENTURE
Remember it is the Tour de Adventure.  Expect the unexpected in weather, sights and experiences.
